The Sorley MacLean Memorial Appeal was formally launched by the Saltire Society, in association with twenty-two partner organisations, at the Royal National Mod in Inverness in 1997. This led to the establishment of The Sorley MacLean Trust with a capital sum of £10,000 in October 2000. The Trust was officially recognised by the Inland Revenue as a Scottish Charity (No SC 030622) on 17 November 2000. The object of the Trust and the method of appointing the Trustees had previously been approved by the partner organisations, the Saltire Society, and the MacLean family.
