Following his retirement from teaching in 1972, Sorley MacLean was in much demand both as a speaker and for poetry readings. As his fame as a poet grew internationally, his work was translated into many other languages, and although his greatest period of productivity as a poet was behind him, his reputation continued to rise throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s as more people were introduced to his poetry. By the time of his death in 1996, Sorley MacLean had acquired a truly international profile as one of Scotland’s great poets. His work was early recognized and admired most of all in Ireland, and this section covers aspects of the reception of his poetry in Ireland, and later in countries such as Canada, and on the continent of Europe.
